How to swaddle safely in UAE heat and air conditioning, the signs it is time to stop, what your baby wears underneath, and how to choose between muslin, bamboo and receiving blankets.

You have finally settled them. Fed, burped, eyes closed, lowered into the cot in slow motion so the mattress does not wake them. And then both arms fly up, the little hands open wide, and they are awake and furious before you have even straightened your back. Twenty minutes of rocking, gone in half a second.

That jolt is the startle reflex, and it is the reason swaddling has been part of caring for newborns in so many cultures for so long, including across the Middle East and South Asia. A snug wrap stops the arms flinging out, so a baby who startles often stays asleep. But swaddling in a hot country comes with a few rules that really matter, and a clear moment when it has to stop. Here is everything, in plain words, from one mum to another.

In this guide:

Does my baby need to be swaddled?

No. Swaddling is optional. Many newborns settle better when swaddled because it calms the startle reflex, but plenty sleep beautifully with their arms free, and some fight a wrap from the very first night. If your baby sleeps well without it, there is nothing to fix.

If you do swaddle, keep three things in mind: a baby who feels held, sleeps on their back, and never gets too hot. Everything else in this guide comes back to those three.

It also helps to know that swaddling is short. For most babies it lasts weeks, not months, because it has to stop as soon as they start trying to roll. So if you are shopping before the birth, think of a swaddle as step one: swaddle for the early weeks, then a sleeping bag once the arms come out.

How to swaddle a baby safely

Use a thin, breathable blanket, keep it below the shoulders, leave the hips loose so the legs can bend up and out, and always lay your baby down on their back. Those four points come from The Lullaby Trust and the International Hip Dysplasia Institute, and they matter far more than getting the folds perfect.

A simple method for a square swaddle blanket:

  1. Lay the blanket in a diamond and fold the top corner down a hand's width.
  2. Place your baby on their back with their shoulders just below the fold. The fabric should never come up over the neck or face.
  3. Bring one side across the chest, arm gently by their side, and tuck it under the opposite side of their body.
  4. Fold the bottom corner up loosely over the feet, leaving plenty of room for the legs.
  5. Bring the other side across and tuck it in.

Then check three things. You can slide two or three fingers between the swaddle and their chest. Their legs fall naturally into a frog shape, bent at the hips and knees. And they go down on their back, every time, for every sleep.

A gentle word about the legs. If you were shown the traditional wrap, with the legs pulled straight and wrapped tight, perhaps by a grandmother who swaddled all of her babies that way, please loosen the bottom half. The International Hip Dysplasia Institute warns that wrapping the legs straight can harm a baby's developing hips. The arms can be snug. The legs need room. A soft, stretchy fabric makes it easier to leave that room, because you are not fighting stiff folds, but stretch is never a reason to wrap tighter. The American Academy of Pediatrics also advises against weighted swaddles, so choose one that adds comfort, never weight.

What should a baby wear inside a swaddle in the UAE?

In most air-conditioned UAE bedrooms, a nappy and a short-sleeve bodysuit under a light swaddle is enough, because the swaddle counts as a layer. In a warmer room, a nappy alone under a thin swaddle can be right. No hat indoors, and no blanket on top of a swaddled baby.

Overheating, not cold, is the real risk with swaddling in the Gulf, so The Lullaby Trust advises lightweight materials and checking your baby's temperature often. Feel the chest or the back of the neck, not the hands. If it is hot or damp, take a layer off.

The tricky part is that a UAE room changes through the night: cold by 4am as the AC keeps going, then warm fast if the power cuts or someone switches it off. If your room swings, dress for the warmer end and let the swaddle do the rest. Our TOG and sleeping bag guide for UAE air conditioning has a full room temperature chart and more on reading your baby's temperature.

Muslin, bamboo or receiving blanket: which should you choose?

Choose whichever is light, breathable and big enough to wrap properly. Muslin is a weave, not a fibre: an open, airy weave that can be cotton or bamboo. A swaddle blanket is any large, thin square made for wrapping, woven or stretchy. A receiving blanket is usually smaller and often thicker, lovely for cuddles and feeds but not always ideal for a snug, breathable wrap.

Cotton muslin swaddles are soft, airy and a classic for good reason: the open weave lets air move through, and they dry quickly.

Ours are different, and it is worth being honest about how. Most bamboo swaddles are woven muslin. We cut ours from the same soft bamboo stretch jersey as our sleepsuits, in the same prints, so the swaddle and the sleepsuit are made to go together. Soft enough for newborn skin, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and stretchy enough to make wrapping feel less like origami.

What the stretch does well:

  • It gently conforms around your baby, so you get a close, comfortable wrap without pulling hard.
  • It is more forgiving to wrap. Jersey moves with your hands, lies flatter and tucks more easily than crisp woven muslin.
  • No stiff, bulky folds around a small newborn body.
  • Room where it matters. Wrapped correctly, the upper body feels snug while the bottom stays loose for little hips and knees.

What to watch for:

  • Stretch makes it easy to pull too tight, especially across the chest. Keep two or three fingers of space.
  • A loose or rushed wrap can work free. Loose fabric near the face is a hazard, so check the wrap before you step away, and if it keeps coming undone, move to a sleeping bag.
  • Jersey is a closed knit, so it can feel warmer than open-weave muslin. In a warm room, dress your baby lighter underneath.
  • It takes longer to dry than muslin.

No swaddle, in any fabric, makes sleep safer or reduces the risk of SIDS on its own. What keeps a swaddled baby safe is how it is used: on their back, below the shoulders, loose at the hips, and stopped at the first sign of rolling.

The ones to save for cuddles only are thick, fleecy or quilted blankets. They are lovely on the sofa, but too warm to wrap a sleeping baby in, especially here.

How many swaddles do you need?

Two or three. One wrapped around the baby, one in the wash, and one in the nappy bag. Newborns go through swaddles the way they go through everything else, and in the UAE the laundry basket never empties anyway.

There is no need to stock up beyond that. Swaddling lasts weeks rather than months, and a good swaddle blanket keeps being useful long after, so a few you love will serve you better than a pile you never reach for.

When should you stop swaddling?

Stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows any sign of trying to roll over, even if they have not managed it yet. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises this because a swaddled baby who rolls onto their tummy cannot use their arms to push up or turn back. For many babies the first signs appear around two to four months, and some start earlier.

Signs it is time:

  • Rocking from side to side, or rolling onto their side during tummy time or in the cot
  • Pushing up on their arms to lift their head and chest
  • Breaking out of the swaddle night after night
  • Getting an arm free and settling better with it out

You will also see advice to stop by around eight weeks. The age is not really the rule. The first sign of rolling is. Go by your baby, and if you are unsure, stop. It can feel like losing your best settling trick just when you had it working. That feeling is normal, and the next step works too.

How to move from a swaddle to a sleeping bag

Before rolling starts, you can ease the change: swaddle with one arm out for a couple of nights, then both arms out, then move to a sleeping bag. Once your baby shows signs of rolling, skip the steps and go straight to the sleeping bag.

A sleeping bag keeps the cosy feeling of a swaddle without wrapping the arms, and it replaces a loose blanket, which the AAP advises keeping out of a baby's sleep space. Choose one sized for your baby's weight, with a snug neck and armholes. Our 1.0 TOG bamboo sleeping bags start at 6.5 kg in size Small, so if your baby is lighter than that when swaddling ends, use a newborn-sized bag until they reach it.

Be honest with yourself about the first week. For some babies the switch takes a night or two. For others it is a rough few nights of more waking while they discover their own hands. A familiar bedtime routine, a dark room and a steady temperature help more than anything you can buy, and it does pass.

What else can you use a swaddle blanket for?

Almost everything, from the day your baby is born and long after the swaddling stops. A swaddle blanket is one of the true newborn essentials, and wrapping is only one of its jobs. Use it as a nursing cover in a busy mall, a clean layer on a changing table or on a floor that is not yours, a soft layer for tummy time, a cuddle blanket while your baby is awake, a light layer over their legs in the stroller when the mall AC is freezing and you are right there with them, and the backdrop for half the photos you will take this year.

One use to avoid, especially here: do not drape a swaddle or any blanket over a pram or buggy to shade it. The Lullaby Trust warns that covering a pram stops the air flowing and can make a baby dangerously hot underneath. Use a clip-on sunshade instead, and keep outings to the cooler parts of the day in summer.

You can find our bamboo swaddle blankets alongside our sleeping bags in our sleep bags and swaddle blankets collection, in prints like Mermaid Love and Anchor Away, the same prints as our sleepsuits.

The short version

Swaddling is optional, calming and short-lived. If you swaddle, keep it light, below the shoulders and loose at the hips, and always put your baby down on their back. Dress them lightly underneath and check the chest or neck, not the hands. Stop at the first sign of rolling, move into a sleeping bag sized for their weight, and never cover a pram with a blanket.

If some of this is new to you, please do not worry about the nights that came before. Every one of us learns this as we go, usually at 3am, usually from another mum. Now you know, and that is all that matters.

Frequently asked questions

How do you swaddle a baby safely?

Use a thin, breathable blanket, keep it below the shoulders, and wrap the arms snugly while leaving the hips loose so the legs can bend up and out. Always lay your baby on their back. You should be able to slide two or three fingers between the swaddle and their chest.

When should I stop swaddling my baby?

Stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows any sign of trying to roll over, even before they can do it. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises this because a swaddled baby on their tummy cannot use their arms to move. For many babies this is around two to four months.

Why is swaddling not recommended after 8 weeks?

The concern is rolling, not the age. Some babies start trying to roll around eight weeks, and a swaddled baby who rolls onto their tummy cannot push up or turn back. That is why the American Academy of Pediatrics says to stop at the first sign of rolling, whenever it comes.

Do babies wear clothes inside a swaddle?

Usually a nappy and a thin short-sleeve bodysuit is enough under a light swaddle in an air-conditioned UAE room. The swaddle counts as a layer, so avoid adding more. Check your baby's chest or the back of their neck, and remove a layer if it feels hot or damp.

Is it safe to swaddle a baby in the UAE heat?

Yes, if the swaddle is thin and breathable and your baby is dressed lightly underneath. Overheating is the main risk, so skip hats and blankets, keep the cot out of direct sun, and check the chest or back of the neck. In a warm room, a nappy alone under a light swaddle can be enough.

Can swaddling cause hip problems?

It can if the legs are wrapped straight and tight. The International Hip Dysplasia Institute advises keeping the hips loose so the legs can bend up and out in a natural frog position. Keep the wrap snug around the arms and loose around the legs.

What is the difference between muslin and a swaddle?

Muslin is a loose, breathable weave, usually cotton or bamboo. A swaddle is any blanket used to wrap a baby snugly, so many swaddles are made of muslin, while others are stretchy knits. Both work if they are lightweight and large enough to wrap properly.

Is a receiving blanket the same as a swaddle?

Not quite. A receiving blanket is usually smaller and often thicker, and it is used for cuddles, feeds and general use. A swaddle blanket is larger and thinner so it can wrap a baby snugly without overheating, which matters in a hot climate.

Are bamboo swaddles safe for babies?

Yes, a bamboo swaddle is as safe as any swaddle when used correctly: lightweight, below the shoulders, loose at the hips, and with the baby always on their back. Look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which means the fabric has been tested for harmful substances.

Is a stretchy swaddle better than muslin?

Neither is safer. They just feel different. A stretchy bamboo jersey swaddle conforms gently around a baby and is easier to wrap without stiff folds, while open-weave muslin is airier and dries faster. With stretch, take care not to pull it tight across the chest, and check the wrap stays in place.

How many swaddles do I need for a newborn?

Two or three is plenty: one in use, one in the wash and one in the nappy bag. Swaddling usually lasts only a few weeks, and good swaddle blankets stay useful afterwards as feeding covers and play mats.

What can I use instead of swaddling?

A wearable sleeping bag is the usual next step. It keeps your baby warm with their arms free and replaces a loose blanket. Choose one sized for your baby's weight, with a snug neck and armholes.
