Bamboo Swaddle Blankets, Bibs & Burp Cloths

I have ruined more of my own clothes than either of my children ever ruined of theirs. There is a stage where you quietly stop wearing anything you like, because everything you own has a milk patch on the shoulder by nine in the morning.

Baby bibs, burp cloths and swaddle blankets are the kit that gets used more than anything else in the house and thought about least. Nobody puts them on a registry.

Ours are bamboo lyocell and OEKO-TEX certified, the magnetic bibs close in one movement, and a single swaddle blanket ends up doing about six different jobs. I bought all of this badly before I made it properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bibs and burp cloths do I actually need?

More than you think, because teething drool starts long before solid food and both get washed daily in this climate. Enough that a full laundry cycle never leaves you without a clean one is the realistic number.

Are the magnetic bibs safe for a baby who chews everything?

Yes. The magnets are fully sealed inside the fabric layers, not exposed at the surface, and the whole bib is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified against Product Class I, the tier written for babies and toddlers, so nothing harmful sits against skin or goes in the mouth.

Can I use the swaddle blanket for actual swaddling?

Yes, it is sized generously enough for a proper newborn swaddle. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises stopping swaddling as soon as a baby shows any sign of rolling, usually between eight weeks and four months. Move to a sleep bag from that point.

Are bamboo swaddle blankets too warm for a UAE summer?

No, and this is where they earn their place. Bamboo lyocell is breathable and moves moisture away from the skin rather than holding it, so a swaddle blanket works as shade over a pram in Dubai or Abu Dhabi without trapping heat underneath. For sleep in a room held at 20 to 24 degrees, a swaddle or a 1.0 TOG sleep bag is the right weight most of the year.

How do I wash bamboo bibs and burp cloths so they stay absorbent?

Warm wash, no fabric softener, and skip anything that coats fibres. Softener is what kills absorbency in bamboo. They reach their most absorbent after the first few washes, not straight out of the packet.

The one thing I would tell a new mother here to buy first

The swaddle blankets, and not primarily for swaddling. In the Gulf they earn their place in the daytime. Shade over a pram without trapping heat underneath. A feeding cover in a mall in Dubai or Doha.

A clean layer on a floor that is never as clean as it looks. Something breathable between a baby and a car seat that has been sitting in the sun in a car park in Dubai.

They are large, they get softer with every wash, and they come in the same prints as the bibs and burp cloths if you like things to match.

The fabric is doing real work in all of that. Bamboo lyocell moves moisture off the skin and lets heat go rather than holding it, which is why a blanket over a pram here does not turn into a warm pocket the way a heavier weave does.

Every piece is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified against Product Class I, the strictest class and the one applied to articles for babies and toddlers, so the thing you are draping over a two week old has been tested thread by thread.

For the sleep side of swaddling and for proper TOG guidance, the sleep bags and swaddle blankets collection covers it in full.

  • The stuff nobody puts on the registry

Bibs are the piece you underbuy. Everyone imagines them as a feeding thing, so they buy four and assume that covers it. Then teething starts at four months, months before any solid food, and suddenly you are getting through several a day from drool alone.

A wet bib sitting against the neck all afternoon is how that red irritated ring under the chin appears. The honest answer is to own enough that you are never down to the last one on a laundry day, and to wash them constantly, which here means daily anyway.

Our magnetic bibs matter for one specific reason. A baby who has decided she is finished with being held still does not wait for you to tie anything behind her neck. Magnets sealed inside the fabric mean the bib is on in a single movement, one-handed, with a wriggling baby on your hip. The round bibs cover the chest properly for feeding.

The bandana shape is the everyday one, the one that looks like part of the outfit rather than equipment. Burp cloths do the job people think a muslin does, and bamboo lyocell absorbs quickly while staying soft against a chin that is already sore, which matters enormously if you have a refluxy baby and that cloth is over your shoulder most of the day.

The four things in here, plainly. Bamboo swaddle blankets in the print range. Burp cloths in the matching prints. Round magnetic bibs in two-piece sets, which cover the chest properly at mealtimes. Bandana magnetic bibs in two-piece sets, which are the everyday drool ones and look like part of the outfit. The 1.0 TOG sleep bags sit here as well.
